Sandusky Company Makes Substantial Investment into Marine Towing, Commercial Salvage Operations
Towboat “Guardian” Now In Service
Sandusky, Ohio, June 25, 2015: Lake Erie Towing / TOWBOAT US has placed its newest multi-mission response vessel “Guardian,” into service at it’s Sandusky, Ohio homeport. The company purchased a 30’ Extreme Pilot Master Rigid Hull Inflatable boat from Homer, Alaska over the past winter and recently completed a retrofit of the vessel in order to make it available for daily use on Lake Erie and the Sandusky Bay. The boat was built in 2003 in Seattle, Washington by Northwind Marine and it now has a full complement of specialized marine towing and salvage equipment installed. Some of the upgrades include new marine VHF radios, a radio direction finder, radar system, GPS systems / plotters, new Coast Guard approved LED navigation and mission specific lighting to go along with specialized pumps, hoses, a generator, dive gear, airbags and a complete array of towing bridles, harnesses, straps and lines. The retrofit has turned “Guardian” into one of the best equipped marine towing / salvage vessels on Lake Erie.
Lake Erie Towing owner Kenji Sanders of Sandusky made the “more than six-figure” investment to better serve the marine towing / salvage business that has been in his family for more than a generation. No public financing or support was needed to complete the investment, something Sanders takes great pride in. “I believe the time is right to invest in the downtown Sandusky waterfront – and for businesses like ours to invest in their future even if you can’t see the improvements in a storefront or street corner.” Fleet Manager and senior captain Jim Kennedy says, “We also decided to lease a dock at the city’s Paper District Marina this summer because of its central location and because we want to be a part of the rebirth of the city’s waterfront area – a rebirth that has already started and we don’t want to be left behind.” You can see “Guardian” and its distinctive red colored hull moored at the marina all summer.
Lake Erie Towing maintains a fleet of nine vessels that are specialized for marine towing, salvage and environmental cleanup and recovery (6 towboats, 2 spill response boats, 1 airboat). Their response area includes Lake Erie from the islands to Avon Point, including the entire Sandusky Bay and the Sandusky River, the Huron River, the Vermilion River and the Black River in Lorain.
